Spirit Bird

A Sanctuary in Flight

Spirit Bird is a garden pavilion deeply rooted in landscape, materiality, and family. The project was realized within the garden where Charlotte, the founder of ONE NEST, grew up.

The design was inspired by her mother’s favorite song, Spirit Bird by Xavier Rudd. Conceived as an abstract bird with asymmetrical wings, the structure follows the existing lines of the garden originally designed by her father. Here, architecture and landscape are treated as a single system, reinforcing one another through geometry, light, and seasonal change.

From an early age, Charlotte's father demonstrated the possibilities of creating with intention and care. He built his own house and cultivated a garden that supports a rich ecosystem of plants, birds, and insects. This environment shaped her understanding of construction as a process rooted in patience, observation, and respect for living systems.

The realization of Spirit Bird followed an adaptive building process. Rather than relying solely on predetermined calculations, material behavior, site conditions, and hands-on experimentation informed the design as it evolved. This approach demonstrates how precision and flexibility can coexist in resilient, landscape-integrated architecture.
